Georgia’s CPI up 3.1% in August

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Georgia increased by 3.1% y/y in August, while edging up by 0.5% compared to July, statistics office Geostat said on September 3. 

Transport prices had the biggest impact on the annual risen the CPI, increasing by 7.8% to add 1.04 percentage points (pp) to the overall growth of the index. 

In the important category of food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose by a more modest 3.2%, which sent the overall index up by 0.96pp. The steepest increase was in the price of vegetables (up 24.7%), while there were smaller increases in prices of oils and fats (4.4%), meat (4.3%), fish (3.3%) and milk, cheese and eggs (2.0%).

Clothing and footwear prices dropped by 8.8% in annual terms, dragging the overall index down by 0.33pp. The only other decline was recorded for communication prices, which dropped 1.3%. 

The main contributor to the monthly price increase was food and non-alcoholic beverages which were up 1.5%, contributing 0.44pp. No other sector made a contribution of more than 0.02pp. 

Again, clothing and footwear prices were down, dropping by 1.1% on the month to bring the overall index down by 0.04pp.
