An investigator from Slovakia's National Crime Agency's Anti-crime Unit has charged an entrepreneur identified as Marian K. with ordering the murders of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova, the Special Prosecutor's Office announced on March 14, the Slovak News Agency (SNA) reported.

Kuciak is believed to have been killed in connection with his last article for Aktuality.sk covering alleged tax fraud connected to the luxury Five Star Residence in Bratislava and the suspicious activities of businessman Marian Kocner and his links to the ruling political party Smer-SD.

His murder was unprecedented in the modern history of Slovakia. Although two other journalists have gone missing – Pavol Rypal since 2008 and Miroslav Pejko since 2015 – a confirmed murder of a journalist had not occurred since 1990.

Since the very beginning, the priority of my government has been to ensure objective investigation into the murders of two young people, which is why I absolutely appreciate the results achieved by the work of police and the prosecutor's office,” the Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said.

“I've been convinced since the beginning that we put the best people there, and the results have shown up. Let's take action to prevent such a tragedy,” stated President Andrej Kiska, thanking the investigators for their work.

“We appreciate the work by police, investigators and prosecutors who are doing their utmost to bring both the murderers and the people who ordered the hit to justice,” said representatives of For a Decent Slovakia initiative Juraj Seliga and Karolina Farska.
