Real wages in Ukraine grew 12.9% year-on-year in September following a 15.7% y/y growth in August, the State Statistics Service reported on October 29.
The average monthly nominal wage rose to UAH9,042 a month ($321) from UAH8,977 ($334) in August, but declined 1.2% month-on-month in real and dollar terms.
The leading regions for average monthly wages remained the city of Kyiv (UAH13,614), the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk region (UAH9,850) and the Kyiv region (UAH9,132).
The largest nominal average wage growth was in public services and defence (32% y/y) and administration services (31% y/y). Within the industrial sector, the highest nominal wages were in pharmaceuticals (UAH16,389), mining (UAH12,870), and in coke and oil production (UAH11,398).
Evgeniya Akhtyrko at Kyiv-based brokerage Concorde Capital believes that accelerated consumer inflation contributed to cooling wage growth in real terms in September. She expects real wages to climb 9-10% y/y in 2018.
