Bulgarian government ranks second among the ten richest Bitcoin owners in the world following police operations seizing possessions of alleged criminals, according to a ranking from the Usethebitcoin.com news outlet.

The portal has drafted a ranking of the 10 biggest owners of the crypto currency over the past eight years, and Bulgaria came right after Bitcoin’s creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

“Bulgaria is currently sitting on one of the biggest stashes of Bitcoin in the world,” Usethebitcoin.com wrote.

It explained that the police have seized 213,519 Bitcoins, enough to pay off a quarter of the country’s national debt, following an operation against organised crime.

At the time, the investigative news outlet Bivol.bg wrote that the details on this operation have remained unclear and the government has never revealed what had happened to the seized Bitcoins.

Although the media has demanded information on the storage of the crypto currency, Bulgarian police had refused to provide it, which raised concerns that the Bitcoins could have disappeared.

Bulgaria leads in the ranking ahead of one of the largest crypto exchanges – BitFinex – and the FBI, which came third and fourth respectively.
