Lithuanian retail sales growth came in at 4.8% y/y in July at calendar-adjusted constant prices, Statistics Lithuania reported on August 28.

Sales thus eased their growth rate in comparison to the 5.7% annual expansion in June. Retail sales have been on an uninterrupted growth track since 2015.

An improving labour market and growing incomes remain drivers of retail turnover in Lithuania. Strong household consumption combined with rebounding investment are poised to keep the Lithuanian economy on a path of steady growth this year.

Lithuanian GDP growth accelerated to an adjusted 4% y/y in the second quarter (4.1% y/y in unadjusted terms). That puts Lithuania on track to perform better than expectations of 2.7% GDP growth in 2019 overall.

In monthly seasonally and calendar-adjusted terms, sales decreased 0.2% in July, compared to an expansion of 1.2% m/m in June.

Of the main retail categories, food, alcohol, and tobacco sales grew 0.6% y/y on a calendar adjusted basis in July; June saw a growth of 3% y/y in that category.

Sales of non-food items grew 8.2% y/y in July, slightly below the expansion of 9.1% y/y in June. Sales growth of automotive fuels accelerated to 6.8% y/y, compared to 4.8 y/y the preceding month.

In nominal terms, sales came in at €1.07bn in current prices in July, a decrease versus €1.19bn in June but a gain on €995mn in July 2018, Statistics Lithuania noted.
