Romania signs €900mn contract for Piranha armoured vehicles

Romania’s government on January 12 signed a €900mn contract to buy 227 Piranha 8x8 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs) from US producer General Dynamic, partly assembled at Uzina Mecanica Bucuresti in Romania.

In total, Romania has approved the acquisition of 657 armoured vehicles in the medium term, under the military acquisition strategy endorsed in August by the parliament.

In 2018, 36 vehicles will be delivered under the contract, out of which six will be assembled in Romania. The rest of the vehicles will be delivered by 2021 and assembled in Romania.  

At the same time, Romania is involved in negotiations with Rheinmetall on the local production of Agils 8x8 amphibious armoured vehicles. The German armoured vehicles producer and the local manufacturing company in Moreni have already formed a joint venture.

Romania also signed in December a contract with Italian group Iveco for the purchase of 173 6x6 military trucks. The trucks will be delivered this year. In 2015, the Italian producer delivered 57 vehicles including 6x6 trucks.
