The United Nations reported on February 11 that rebuilding Gaza will require more than $53bn, with $20bn needed in the first three years to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the war-torn territory.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that an "immense tragedy" could unfold if hostilities resume, as the three-week ceasefire between Hamas and Israel shows signs of strain following US President Donald Trump’s repeated comments on taking over the Gaza Strip and removing the remaining Palestinians residents.

"While it has not been possible in the current environment to fully assess the totality of needs that will be required in Gaza, the interim assessment offers an early indication of the enormous scale of recovery and reconstruction needs in the Gaza Strip," Guterres said in a statement delivered through UN Geneva spokesperson Rolando Gomez.

The reconstruction estimate comes as Hamas suspended the planned release of hostages, citing continued Palestinian casualties and insufficient aid delivery to the Strip.

Despite these challenges, humanitarian assistance increased significantly during the ceasefire period on January 19.

More than 1.5mn people have received food parcels since the pause in fighting, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The World Food Programme has reached over 860,000 individuals with food assistance and cash support.

UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, confirmed its operations continue uninterrupted across Gaza and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

"We are committed to staying and delivering," the organisation stated.

Infrastructure restoration faces significant obstacles, with widespread damage and shortages of essential equipment hampering efforts to improve water production.

Nearly 60 health partners are currently providing medical services throughout Gaza, while the UN reproductive health agency UNFPA prepares to distribute supplies to benefit 65,000 people over three weeks.
