Bulgaria’s consumer inflation speeds up to 4% in February

Consumer prices in Bulgaria rose by 4% in February compared to the same period last year (chart), according to preliminary National Statistical Institute (NSI) data released on March 17. Month-on-month, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.6%.

Consumer prices, which stood at 4.7% in December 2023, continued their decline throughout 2024. However prices have recently started to rise again, and in February 2025 they were higher compared to a year ago when the annual CPI inflation stood at 3.3%.

The fastest annual increase in prices was for restaurants and hotels, which rose by 9.5%. The prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco moved up by 7.4% year-on-year, followed by education (6.8%), culture and entertainment (6.1%), housing (5.6%), and food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.6%).

In contrast, household furnishing experienced a downturn, with prices dropping by 0.7%, while clothing prices decreased by 1.4% year-on-year.

In 2024, the inflation rate as compared to 2023 was 2.4%.

The NSI's data on the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) showed a 0.4% monthly increase and a 3.9% annual rise in February.
