An Iranian MP has said that Iran possesses the "technical capacity" to produce nuclear weapons, stating that only its "will" has prevented the country from crossing the breakout threshold.

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, made these remarks while criticising the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) latest report on Iran's nuclear programme, labelling it "biased, non-technical, and completely political," Iran Student News Agency reported on March 3.

Rezaei's comments come in response to the IAEA's February report, which expressed "serious concern" over Iran's "significantly increased production and accumulation of high enriched uranium." The IAEA highlighted that Iran is the only non-nuclear weapon state producing such material and that its enriched uranium stockpile has reached levels theoretically sufficient for multiple nuclear weapons.

The report also cited a lack of progress in resolving outstanding issues, including unexplained uranium traces at undeclared sites, inconsistencies in Iran's declarations, and restricted access for IAEA inspectors.

The IAEA confirmed Iran's increased use of advanced centrifuges for uranium enrichment, something Tehran has repeatedly said is trumped up claims backed by Israel.

On March 3, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated the same concerns in his introductory statement to the Board of Governors, stressing the need for high-level engagement and dialogue to resolve the issues.

Rezaei accused the IAEA of acting as a "political tool" for Western powers [US and Israel] and dismissed some of the report's claims.

He argued that Iran has a strong record of IAEA inspections, citing numerous visits to nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and the continued operation of IAEA cameras within the country.

Rezaei stressed that Iran has refrained from producing a nuclear bomb based on a religious decree (fatwa) by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and currently has no plan to do so.

However, he warned that "if the pressures of the IAEA and Western countries continue and become a threat to our existence, it is possible and probable that we will reconsider our nuclear strategy."

The remarks emerge at a pivotal moment, as tensions between Tehran and Washington over nuclear issues have escalated significantly.

US President Donald Trump has reinstated the "maximum pressure" policy against Iran, urging Tehran to engage in comprehensive discussions on both nuclear and non-nuclear matters to avert the risk of military confrontation.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated on March 2 that Iran rejects the prospect of negotiations under pressure, underlining its readiness and capability to defend itself against any form of aggression.
