Rumours that Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli was no more dissolved on April 4 when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling coalition junior partner made a long-sought public appearance that proved otherwise, video footage and photos shared by the MHP (@MHP_Bilgi) showed.
It was the first time in 66 days that Bahceli, 77, had been seen in public, according to local media reports.
Video: MHP personnel perhaps erred in dressing Bahceli’s car with flowers, giving the vehicle a "coffinesque" feel.
On February 4, the MHP said that Bahceli had undergone cardiac surgery. It meant a two-to-three month recovery period was necessary for a man of Bahceli’s age, but rumours that he had passed away nevertheless erupted.
To overcome the rumours, Bahceli held phone calls with politicians, journalists and TV characters. Nevertheless, the rumours continued.
Following his public appearance, some Turks put forward claims that the person seen was a double of Bahceli, who went through plastic surgery to enhance his resemblance to the MHP chief.
Some media reports on the reappearance read like obituaries. “Bahceli has played a prominent role in shaping Turkish politics since the late 1990s,” Bianet noted.
