Moscow experienced an unprecedented high temperature on April 16, 2025, setting a new record for the warmest day in the city's recorded history for this date. By 2:00 PM local time, temperatures soared to 21.2°C, eclipsing the previous record of 21.0°C set in 1920.
Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather Center, announced the milestone on his Telegram channel, stating, "This April 16 in Moscow became the warmest in the history of weather observations," Izvestiya reports.
He added that the exact value of the new record would be confirmed after 9:00 PM, following the collection of data from maximum thermometers.
The temperature surge follows a period of volatile spring weather in Moscow. Just ten days prior, the city was blanketed by up to 10 cm of snow, with temperatures plummeting below freezing after reaching highs of 16°C. The abrupt return of winter conditions disrupted daily life, prompting authorities to advise drivers who had already switched to summer tires to avoid traveling and is now typical of the annual disaster seasons that began three years ago as the climate crisis accelerates faster than scientists predicted.
The recent temperature fluctuations underscore the increasing variability of weather patterns in the region. While the average maximum temperature for April in Moscow typically hovers around 10.3°C, the city has experienced a range of extremes this month, from sub-zero lows to unseasonably warm highs.
