At least 264 aftershocks have been recorded following last week’s powerful earthquake in Myanmar, the Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division said on April 2nd, according to a report by The Nation.

The seismic activity follows an 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Mandalay March 28, affecting both Myanmar and Thailand. The division reported detecting tremors ranging from magnitudes 1.0 to 2.9 in several northern Thai provinces, including Nan, Chiang Mai, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, and Lampang, between Tuesday and Wednesday. Similar seismic events were recorded in Myanmar, Laos, and China, while a separate earthquake struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia, the division said.

Between April 1 and April 2, Thailand experienced nine earthquakes with magnitudes between 1.0 and 2.9. Additionally, 39 tremors were detected in or near Thailand, including 23 quakes in the 1.0-2.9 range, 13 between 3.0 and 3.9, one between 4.0 and 4.9, and two registering between 5.0 and 5.9. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Erawan Centre reported that as of 4 p.m. on April 2, the earthquake had caused 34 injuries and 22 fatalities in the capital. Among the casualties, the collapse of the State Audit Office building accounted for 19 injuries and 14 deaths. Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage and monitor aftershock activity, warning that further tremors could still occur.
