The US Congress has approved the appointment of Mehmet Oz of Pennsylvania as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Senate has announced.
Oz has become the first Turk to lead the CMS, according to business daily Dunya. He will spend an annual budget of around $1.5 trillion.
The TV personality, known as Dr Oz, is a Turk who was born in Ohio. His father is from the Konya province in Turkey.
His friendship with Donald Trump dates back to their time in showbusiness. Oz became famous with his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show at the beginning of the 2000s.
“I want to begin by thanking President Trump for his passionate desire to Make America Healthy Again [MAHA],” Oz told the Senate committee on March 14 during his hearing to be Trump’s CMS administrator.
“My physician father immigrated here because he saw the US as a beacon of hope and a land of opportunity where his decisions mattered,” he added.
Oz won nine Daytime Emmy Awards hosting The Dr. Oz Show, where he taught millions of Americans how to make healthier lifestyle choices and gave a strong voice to the key pillars of the MAHA Movement, Trump said in November when he nominated Oz.
In 2014, Oz also testified at the Senate over claims of false and deceptive advertising of weight-loss products.
In 2022, Oz ran for a seat in the Senate, but he lost the election in Pennsylvania.
