At least nine people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes late on April 2 on southern Syria, according to Syrian state news media SANA.
Following the strikes, Syria's Foreign Ministry condemned the latest wave of Israeli airstrikes that targeted military sites across four Syrian provinces of Hama, Homs, Damascus, and Daraa, with a significant focus on Hama Military Airport.
According to Israel's Channel 14, the Israeli military launched approximately 25 attacks on Hama Airport, alongside additional strikes in Damascus and Daraa in southern Syria.
Local sources reported that on April 2, Israeli warplanes carried out more than 20 air raids on Hama Military Airport. Ambulances were seen rushing to the site, with Turkey admitting its military engineers were killed in an airstrike.
In a statement, the Syrian foreign affairs ministry denounced the attacks as a blatant violation of international law and Syria’s sovereignty, stating that “within 30 minutes, Israeli forces launched airstrikes on five different locations across the country, resulting in the near-total destruction of Hama Military Airport and injuring dozens of civilians and military personnel.”
The ministry asserted that this unprovoked escalation is a deliberate attempt to destabilise Syria and prolong the suffering of its people. It confirmed that, as Syria works to rebuild after 14 years of war, such repeated assaults represent a clear effort by Israel to normalise violence in the country, undermining recovery efforts and reinforcing a culture of impunity.
Syria’s state-run Al-Ikhbariya reported that Israeli airstrikes targeted the vicinity of Hama Military Airport and the T4 Military Airport in eastern Homs. SANA also confirmed that Israeli warplanes struck near the Scientific Research Center in Barzeh, Damascus.
Daraa has witnessed heavy bombardment and a ground incursion, leading to multiple civilian casualties.
Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said on April 3, "Israeli forces had advanced within the Golan Brigade 474 sector in the town of Tasil, in Daraa’s countryside. According to Adraee, Israeli troops seized weapons and destroyed infrastructure in the area."
He added that during the incursion, "armed militants opened fire on Israeli forces operating in the region, prompting a response that eliminated several terrorists through ground and aerial strikes."
The Israeli military reportedly completed its operation without casualties, with Adraee stressing that the presence of weapons in southern Syria poses a direct threat to Israel.
Local sources in Daraa reported that Israeli forces advanced into the Jbeiliyah Dam area before shelling it with dozens of artillery rounds. Some residents of Nawa and nearby villages attempted to resist the incursion.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa previously called on Arab nations to take responsibility in supporting Syria against Israeli policies and to pressure Israel to withdraw from southern Syria.
At the Cairo Arab summit on March 4, al-Sharaa warned that leniency toward Israeli occupation could threaten Arab national security. The Syrian government also called on the international community to take a firm stance, urging pressure on Israel to halt its aggression and adhere to international law, including its obligations under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
